No moon maiden should bear a child aboard the House of Sin and Silk, yet a child who shouldn’t be grows in Mara’s belly. On the eve of Harvest Festival, fate pushes Mara on a course that will test her strength, her courage, and her love. A woman who knows nothing but her gilded, floating cage will journey through a city where an ancient darkness rises against the dying light. Cloaked in ashen burlap with an infant in her arms, a slave with no last name will determine if hope rises with the sun or if the next Harvest Festival will be the reaping of mankind.

I must admit I approach self published and new authors with a sense of cautious optimism. I try not to get TOO excited when I like the synopsis on the back of a book or on Amazon. However, I do like the cheep and free books, and every now and then, I find a gem that reminds me all authors had to start somewhere, even the great ones started small. I think, judging by “Ashwalk Pilgrim”, AB Bradley is going to be an author we hear a lot about in the coming years! As I opened my kindle to the first chapter and saw the title “House of Sin and Silk,” I found myself thinking, oh we have another EL James and 50 Shades starting here. As I read of Mara's status as a, pregnant slave and moon maiden, complete with a cheap brass collar, aboard a pleasure ship, that did not have room for a slave maiden with a child, run by a madam, I realized this was going to be a deeper, more intense story.
When Mara is able to leave the ship and I realize the lifetime she has spent aboard ship has left her ill prepared for life in town as a slave with limited means, under unthinkable circumstances, (I don't want to give it away but it will break anyone's heart) I found myself emotional, thinking, what would I do, how could I cope, how could I even move? Then I think, because if I was a mother I'd do anything for my child. The twists and turns are phenomenal, and the descriptions, the fantasy, the detail of this world Bradley has created are incredible, well thought out, and planned to perfection. Mara is absolutely the heroine as this story unfolds, trapped in the middle of the growing unrest between the religion of the society and a king who seems fairer then he truly is as he tries to bring about his own darker religion while the power of the other dwindles. He hunts Mara down for all the power she holds in her son, while she fights to save his soul, and the king plans for a much darker future.
It has been quite some time since I have read a book so excellently written that highlighted the strength and courage of a woman so powerfully. I can almost hear my niece saying, “Mara is a kick butt woman hero, hear her roar!!!” This is the highest compliment she gives, and I agree! The most astonishing thing, this strong “kick butt” woman was written by a man! Hat's off, awesome book, can't wait for the next!

Ashwalk Pilgrim Unbreakable Iron Book 1 eBook AB Bradley Carlos Quevado Laura Kingsley Reviews
A wonderful read, with a very unique plot to it. Mara is such a strong woman character, stuck in a tough predicament of being pregnant on a ship called "The House of Sin and Silk". You'll travel with her on her journey as she unveils the world around her. The author does a great job at painting the picture for this journey and you feel immediately transformed to Mara's side. A truly captivating book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm glad to see it's a series--I'll definitely be reading book two!
There are many things I look for in a book. Powerful settings, emotional dialogue, gripping scenes, and unforgettable moments. I found that my expectations were consistently met throughout my reading.
"He fell upon the room’s fine rugs, landing on his knees and palms. Groaning, he shook his head, an oozing line of blood dripping from his lips and staining the room’s carpet."
There is strong imagery right from the beginning of the book and continues right until the end.
"A long silence settled over them. A heavy tear slipped from her eye and rolled down her cheek."
There is so much power and desperation behind
Mara, that it makes her character believable and likable. I was overwhelmed with emotions while reading about her journey and persistence .
I look forward to reading more by this Author.
As a new mother and having been in a similar situation as the titular heroine previously, Ashwalk Pilgrim tore my heart to shreds and mended it back together again. I expected a lovely twist on the high fantasy genre starting out. Yet time and again, the author threw me through a loop and my emotions through the gauntlet. Mara's world is filled with flawed people and exotic locations and she approaches everything with slightly tinted vision. Her innocence above all was what tugged at me the most. She truly expects the best from other people only to be crushed at every turn. Her journey grabs you and demands you take each painful step with her until the end. To avoid spoilers, suffice to say the ending was simply beautiful.
Looking forward to the next book and return of a few characters from the first, along with new lands, more magic and promised peril.
I simply love any fiction series that can get me invested in a story line and group of characters and bring me along for an epic adventure that will stick with me for years to come. I can think of only about a half dozen that have accomplished this for me and I suspect that author AB Bradley is going to be added to that list with his amazing new "Unbreakable Iron" series.
The first book in this series is "Ashwalk Pilgrim" and is the story of Mara, who begins the journey on a ship called the House of Sin and Silk. An apt name as it is a pleasure ship and she is slave who has found herself pregnant. This certainly wasn't in the plan, isn't permitted and she is forced to seek refuge elsewhere. This isn't an easy life either as she doesn't know much different and has clearly placed everything on the line to protect her child. There is political and religious unrest as well in Mara's world and it's interesting how this affects her so directly as she travels and tries to protect her child.
I loved the original story line with Ashwalk Pilgrim and the strong female protagonist. We don't get enough of those in these types of series. The scene setting for me was very vivid and the character development spot on. I think that there is so much that can be done with this story and I am so excited to see what the author has in store next.
